Upper Pine Fire officials this week were investigating the cause of a Monday fire in a Forest Lakes home.

The fire reported around 8:30 p.m. Monday. The fire was between a vaulted ceiling and the roof. Firefighters were there until around 1 a.m. pulling off roofing and searching for smoldering flames in the insulation.

Chief Bruce Evans reported the residents lit a fire in stove around 5:30 p.m. Around 8 p.m. they heard a crackling sound in the ceiling. They went outside to look and saw flames coming from near the vents, Evans said. On Thursday, he said a cause could not be pinpointed.

Deputy Chief Randy Larson lives a couple blocks away and was there quickly. Los Pinos and Durango fire districts also responded.

Evans said there was no ignition point near the stove. It seemed to have started at the roof peak, but there was no ignition source there.

Firefighting was complicated by water freezing on the metal roof as temperatures dropped, he said. So they had to work from ladders instead of on the roof.

Evans said damage was moderate, with about a 16x16 foot square of roofing removed, along with several roof trusses.

The Red Cross assisted the family with vouchers to stay in a motel.
