Monthly potluck is Saturday

The Pine River Shares monthly potluck will be Saturday at 5 p.m. at the old community gym on South Street in Bayfield. Sloppy Joes will be provided. Participants are invited to bring a side dish or dessert. If you can't bring anything, come anyway. For more information, call the Bayfield Family Center at 884-4747.

Grange hosting garden workshop

Florida Grange #360 is hosting a gardening workshop series.  The first class covers early starts for delicate plants.

The workshop is from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7. This workshop will cover how to start plants which are susceptible to freezing.

There is a $10 registration fee for this workshop to cover the cost of the materials. This includes potting soil, seeds and flats for planting which are yours to keep.

Gore scholarship available for graduating girl

The Dorothy Gore Scholarship sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter CS is available to any La Plata County graduating senior girl who has shown academic promise, leadership potential, serves her community and has at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average. This $1,000 scholarship honors Dorothy Gore, a retired long-time Durango teacher.

All applicants to an academic college are considered although priority is given to applicants to Cottey College, a four-year women's college in Nevada, Missouri, owned by the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Information about Cottey is found online at Cottey College.

Applications for the scholarship are available at high school counseling offices. The application deadline is Friday, March 13. For more information, call Mary Colgan at 259-4039.

Badly Bent performing for BAAM fundraiser

The Bayfield Association for the Advancement of Music is hosting a Valentine's concert starring the bluegrass band Badly Bent. This concert is a fundraiser for the BAAM instrument drive. 

The music department is in need of new instruments for students to play. The concert will be on Friday, Feb. 13 at the new performing arts center at BHS.  The cost is $12 per person or $20 a couple. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Bottom Shelf Brewery, Tuning Fork Cafe or the BHS office.  Tickets also can be purchased from BHS music students or by calling 884-9900.

Methodist Thrift Shop offering scholarship

The Methodist Thrift Shop board offers scholarships for local students to further their education. Applicants are considered on the basis of church involvement, leadership, community service, extracurricular activities and personal attributes. Applications are available at the thrift shop at 986 E. Second Ave. in Durango or from high school counseling offices. The application deadline is March 15.

Speakers to address Cattlemen on comp plan

Julie Westendorff, La Plata County commissioner, and Christi Zeller, executive director of the La Plata County Energy Council,  will speak at the La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen's meeting on Jan. 26.  Westendorff will discuss the county's Comprehensive Plan and new regulations that will have an effect on the county.  Zeller will address the new regulations that are being faced by landowners.  Both ladies will be available to answer questions from the audience.  The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Extension Building at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

Mountain lion tracks found in Bayfield

Bayfield School Superintendent Troy Zabel sent a letter home to Bayfield parents this week informing them of mountain lion tracks spotted on Schroeder Drive in Bayfield near Bayfield Middle School, although an actual cat has not been reported. Mountain lions tend to be active at dawn and dusk, but Zabel recommended children walking to and from school should be careful and walk in pairs or groups if possible.

Performance group selling doughnuts

La Plata County Independent Youth Performing Arts is selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts this week for $10 a dozen. Orders can be picked up at libraries in Bayfield, Ignacio and Durango on Friday, Jan. 30.
