BHS strengthens state case vs. Pagosa

Wolverines score important 2-1 win
Bayfield's Lydia Larson (10) steadies a ball on her foot for the BHS bench to see, as well as Pagosa Springs' Hannah Marnocha (17) and teammate Sophie Turner (19) during Tuesday evening's action inside Wolverine Country Stadium.

Wolverine Country Stadium itself wasn't illuminated Tuesday evening, but the Bayfield girls' soccer team was more than proud to play beneath-and ultimately exit below-the only lights that mattered: the scoreboard's.

Two-to-one victors in a must-win 3A/2A Southwestern League home match versus nemesis Pagosa Springs, freshman Savannah Kaufmann's 32nd-minute finish tied the match at 1-1, and junior Maddy Duran's

penalty kick-created when senior Koya Maniss was fouled from behind not far from "the spot"-in the 58th brought BHS level on aggregate goals [3:3] in their head-to-head season split with the Pirates.

The exact situation against overall league leaders Alamosa (9-2 overall, 9-1 SWL) also now exists, after Bayfield shocked the Mean Moose 2-1 last Thursday at AHS. The two wins mean Jennifer Zelinski's team effectively controls its own quest for the 3A state tournament's automatic-qualifying bid from the three-team District 5.

In all, 17 guaranteed postseason spots are up for grabs, with another seven at-large nods to be awarded when the time comes to seed the state bracket.

BHS can virtually eliminate the guesswork by simply building off Tuesday's triumph and continuing to prevail.

Up next for Bayfield (6-3, 6-2 SWL) will be the always-important northern run to take on Telluride FRiday and Ridgway on Saturday.

With BHS goalkeeper Kailee Millard bettering counterpart Sara Chronowski, PSHS dipped to 5-2-1.

IGNACIO AWAY TODAY: Coming off a quality 5-1 loss at home to Ridgway last Saturday, in which senior Sarina Vigil recorded the Bobcats' second goal in 2015 with a penalty kick past Demon keeper Samantha Medina, Ignacio (0-7, 0-7) will travel today for a 4 p.m. start at Alamosa.
