Shamrocks and shenanigans abounded on St. Patrick's Day on Monday.

But with a 10-0 slam-rocking of the green-clad Farmington JV last Saturday, Bayfield baseball's got to celebrate the Irish holiday a bit early.

Improving to 4-and-0 overall under new Coach Jon Qualls, the Wolverines rode hot bats - junior Matt Knickerbocker went 2-3, sophomore Kelton McCoy 3-3, soph Zane Phelps 3-5-in the heart of the order, and sophomore Taed Heydinger's six innings of three-hit pitching to blank the 4A Scorpions and lock in a first-place 3-up, 0-down mark. Bayfield beat 4A Durango's JV 9-zip the day before.

BHS had begun work in the FHS JV Invitational with a 12-11 escape of 4A Farmington Piedra Vista's JV last Thursday, and the Wolverines will next participate in the Panther varsity's three-day tourney this weekend down at Ricketts Park off Fairgrounds Road and Vine Avenue.

BOBCATS GETTING UNDERWAY: Having waited for several regulars to end their basketball season, Ignacio Baseball will at last get 2014 underway, also at the Panther JV Invitational.

According to the IHS website, today's 4 p.m. contest - against either 3A Bloomfield, N.M., or 3A Shiprock, N.M. - is to be played at the Farmington Sports Complex, located at the intersection of the La Plata Highway and Pinon Hills Boulevard.
