A $10 donation came back in a backpack sent home with a Bayfield Elementary family. 'Pay it Forward' was scrawled on it. Bayfield Kids 4 Kids is trying to raise another $1,500 to meet a $3,000 matching grant by April 1 for the school backpack program.

A local woman has made an anonymous $3,000 gift to the local backpack programs that sends food home with students on weekends.

But there's a catch.

It has to be matched by local gifts by April 1.

Although organizers were panicking at first, they've already raised more than $1,500 and hope the community's generosity will continue to add to the funding.

In addition to cash gifts, people can help by donating food at collection baskets at Pine River Public Library, Bayfield Town Hall and other locations.

The backpacks also are packed on Thursday afternoons by local volunteers, and more hands are always welcome.

The program has been serving as many as 60 families in need every week at Bayfield Elementary.

Collections for food also are taking place now at Bayfield Elementary School and after spring break at Bayfield Middle School.
