Not all who pay bills late are deadbeats

As I was reading last week's Times, I was amazed at the attitude of the Bayfield town manager and clerk. I guess they believe that if the town changes the "due date" on their utilities, everybody would just fall in line. I wonder if they took into account that for folks on Social Security, folks who work for Bayfield School District, folks getting retirement checks, and probably 90 percent of businesss pay salaries/benefits on the 30th of the month.

But I guess the town operates on the belief that if they decree that folks shall pay their bills by the 28th or be listed as late - then by golly, the rest of the world had better get in line and change the day they pay their employees. After all, the town wants that money. I guess we had better be careful and make sure that we get the money together to pay on time or the Marshal's new "disaster recovery" tank will be coming around to collect. But somehow, I don't think Social Security, Bayfield Schools, and 90 percent of the business around are going to change the date that they pay employees/annuitants.

I could be wrong, but I just can't see those pay checks coming sooner just because the Town of Bayfield decrees it. So I guess most of us are going to stay on that late list and live with the town council looking down at us like deadbeats. But as for me, I will continue to pay my town bill on the first of the month with pride. And I encourage everyone else to purposely not pay till the first. Maybe I will be that first "deadbeat" that lets our town marshal fire up that tank.
