Increased security and more natural light are features at the new office wing at Bayfield Elementary School. Superintendent Amy Lyons, administrator Troy Zabel and Marty Zwisler, the district's construction manager, check out the new space on Tuesday.
The new office at Bayfield Elementary School will open next week. The school will be converted into a K-2 campus for next fall.

The first part of two big construction projects for Bayfield schools is open.

Administrative staff at Bayfield Elementary School are moving into new offices and a staff workroom. Construction on the rest of the school, along with the new Bayfield Intermediate School, is slated to be completed this summer.

The new office features a more secure entryway and spacious windows so staff can see who is coming into the school, as well as who is pulling into the parking lot.

The new space includes offices for a principal and assistant principal, nurse's office, staff workroom and a conference room.

School Nurse Cindy Hawkins said she appreciates all of the windows and light, compared to the old offices.

"The staff is really excited," said Amy Lyons, the district's interim superintendent.

The new space, along with the rest of the school, has a new fire sprinkler system and new heating and air systems, said Marty Zwisler, the district's construction manager for the new buildings.

Parents and visitors can start using the new office next week, Lyons said. The student drop-off, however, will remain at the rear of the building for the rest of the year as construction continues throughout parts of the building.

A modular on the south end of the campus will be sold in May, Lyons added. The district will accept bids for the building, which has two classrooms and two bathrooms.

Bayfield Elementary will become a campus for kindergarten through second grade and is slated to open at the end of August.

The new Bayfield Intermediate School is being constructed on Oak Drive, near the current middle school, for third through fifth grades.

The construction is part of a $39 million bond approved in 2016 by district voters. The district also received a state grant for $8.5 million to help pay for the construction.
