Ryan Phelps is all smiles at the Bloomfield meet Saturday after his throwing work, taking first in discus and second in shot.

Not disappointing fans filling 5A Bloomfield, New Mexico's Bobcat Stadium last Friday in his much-anticipated track-and-field season debut, Bayfield senior Ryan Phelps not only dominated the discus with a winning 147-foot, 7-inch throw, but helped the Wolverine boys score 12 points in the shot with a second-place 49'1" heave.

Senior Wyatt Killinen followed in third with his 47'8" best, and junior David Hawkins took fourth with his 45'2" as the throwers accumulated 19 of the squad's third-place 62 team points at the 2018 Bobcat Invitational.

Ignacio came in seventh with six points, all via the arm of senior thrower Natoni Cundiff, who placed second in the discus (129'10") and sixth in the shot (38'7").

Also outstanding in the field events, Bayfield seniors Dawson Heide and Dax Snooks - like Phelps, barely a week removed from BHS' win in the CHSAA Class 3A Boys' Basketball State Championship - placed first (6'0") and sixth (5'6"), respectively, in the high jump. Pole vaulters Chad Winkler and Dawson French finished 2-3 after clearing 10'6" and 10'0".

Wolverine cager Carl Heide hit his first hurdles races this spring with a vengeance, winning the 110-meter race in 15.56 seconds (0.8 faster than Bloomfield's Kenyon Mosley, and 1.16 faster than Bloomfield's Tylon Waite). He also won the 300-meter specialty in 42.16 (KCHS' Dallin Mangelson followed in 44.57, and Waite took third in 44.82).

Already known for showing some scary speed in the trenches during Bayfield Football's State-winning romp this past fall, Killinen laid down a first-place 11.75 in the 100-meter dash, and Dawson Heide earned third in the 400 with a 53.96.

Working himself back into long-distance form, Ignacio's Elco Garcia, Jr., was a top-10 finisher in the 800, taking eighth with a time of 2:19.81. In the 1,600, he was ninth with 5:11.01, and finally 10th in the 3,200-meters, with 11:34.66. Senior Mitchell Neil also left town with a top-10 in the shot (8th, 35'8") and was close to doing so in the discus (12th, 86'1").

Zeb Shields earned an additional top-10 result for Bayfield, finishing ninth in the 800 (2:20.83; teammate Xander Hovenstine was 12th in 2:29.14).

Dylan Hilliker captured ninth in the long jump (17'10").

Up next for Bayfield will be this Friday's Montezuma-Cortez Invitational, while Ignacio will head to Grand Junction Saturday for G.J. Central's Warrior Invitational inside Ralph Stocker Stadium.

Helped by Colton Barker's first-place 49'6" in the shot, Bloomfield amassed 134 points but found themselves well behind 5A Kirtland Central's table-topping 151.
