Led by sophomore Aliyana White's 2A/1A San Juan Basin League- and overall meet-winning 111-foot, six-inch discus throw, the Ignacio girls managed 36 team points and placed ninth overall (sixth in the SJBL title chase) Tuesday afternoon, May 1, at the 2018 San Juan Relays on their home turf at IHS.
White also scored a league title in the shot put with a 34'10" best, which ranked second overall behind only the 35'0" achieved by Bayfield junior Mikayla Barnes. Third overall and second amongst non-SJBL entrants, senior Tiarra Christensen threw 31'2" and also finished second overall in the discus (111'0.5") as the Wolverines piled up 134 points and trailed only 2A Del Norte's 152.
BHS junior Jordan Lanning won the overall long jump competition with a 17'1" maximum, classmate Hannah Whitmer was tops in the pole vault (8'4"), and the 800-meter sprint medley relay (Emma Candelaria/Melissa Roberts/Mylee Sanders/Mary Grayson) prevailed overall in 2:02.70.
IHS freshman Vanessa Gonzales was fourth overall, and fourth in the SJBL with her 14.41 in the 100m dash. Junior teammate Kiana Valdez (30.13) preceded Gonzales (30.91) across the finish line in the 200, and the duo placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the SJBL (sixth and seventh overall; Sanders' 28.65 was fourth overall).
Fourth in the SJBL and fifth overall in the 800 was Ignacio freshman Charlize Valdez, who clocked 2:53.03. Kiana Valdez took fifth amongst SJBL long-jumpers and sixth overall with her 13'9" best.
Roberts placed third amongst non-SJBL runners in the 100 (15.39) and 400 (1:18.48), while BHS teammates Brinlee Owens and Claire Hufnagel each took non-SJBL fourths in the 200 (33.67) and 800 (3:04.79), respectively. Candelaria finished second overall in the 100m hurdles (17.57).
