Service leagues thanks firefighters, rangers, chefs for attending cook-off

Thank you so very much to the Pine River Times for publicizing the Vallecito Service League Chili Supper and Cook-Off on June 17.

Our first-place chef was Jim Krafthefer for a spicy, aromatic "Jim's Green Chili." His name and chili will be engraved on a plaque.

Second place went to Patty Dressel with her tasty "Smoke Jumper" green. Third place was awarded to Susan Hopper and Sue Burns with a smooth, thick and red "Blue Spruce Special."

As always, an interesting variety of chilis were entered: "Minnesota Chili," "Chunky White Chicken," "Smokey Mountain" with fried macaroni, "Mystery Chili" and more. A special thanks to all 10 chili chefs who participated, making this a special and fun event for everyone, including firefighters and crews!

All or most of the out-of-area and out-of-state rangers and firefighters who had been camped for weeks at the U.S. Forest Service work station on CR 501, and our own Upper Pine River fire crew, plus rangers and emergency crews, responded to an invitation to be our honored guests for a great homemade chili meal, tastings and homemade desserts that evening.

When they entered the Community Center, there began long, thunderous applause as everyone stood and thanked these men and women for their courageous and unrelenting efforts at safeguarding lives, property and fire containment.

We are so appreciative of them.
