Outreach event to be held for veteransSouthern Ute Veterans Association, with La Plata County Veterans Service Officer Richard S. Schleeter, will hold an outreach event for veterans from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Multi-Purpose Building, 258 Ute Road, in Ignacio.

A representative from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs regional office in Denver will assist veterans, and Farmington Veterans Center staff will share information about readjustment, military sexual trauma, spousal and family counseling.

The event is open to veterans in La Plata County. Southern Ute veterans are encouraged to attend and learn more about benefits. Snacks will be provided.

Soccer, flag football registration startingBayfield Parks and Recreation is organizing its youth leagues for flag football and soccer. Registration is due Aug. 31 for $35 a player at Bayfield Town Hall or

League games are Sept. 15 through Oct. 20, with a coaches meeting on Sept. 5. Flag football is for pre-K through fifth grades, while soccer is for three years through eighth grade.

Bow hunters and muzzle-loader hunters concerned about closures should check conditions as soon as possible. The bow season starts Aug. 25 and the muzzle-loader season starts Sept. 8.

Referees sought for youth, adult soccerThe Colorado Soccer Referee Program announced that community members are being recruited to work as referees at upcoming youth and adult soccer games, leagues, tournaments and special events.

Online and on-the-field referee training is required. Online training is available to referee 12- and 13-year-old youth leagues, and youth and adult leagues for players 14 and older. An on-the-field training session will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 at La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Pine River Shares to host cookout tonightThe monthly gathering for Pine River Shares is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. tonight in Eagle Park. Hot dogs, burgers and watermelon will be provided. The Women Infants and Childrens program and La Plata Family Centers will have information about resources for local families. Participants can bring a dish to share if they are able.
