It's a busy two days for basketball lovers in Ignacio and Bayfield.
After years of having to host regionals in other venues because of weird CHSAA rules, the Ignacio girls and boys basketball teams are bringing their regional tournaments back home where they belong.
The Ignacio girls kick off action at 3 p.m. today against Sanford, followed by the boys game vs. Denver Christian at 4:45 p.m.
In Ignacio, winning district titles is almost a given, but I think die-hard Bobcat fans understand how many years of games, practices, camps and all-around hard work go into that winning tradition. Congratulations to Coach Valdez and Coach Seibel for bringing their teams to this level of success.
In Bayfield, the girls won their first playoff game in five years, but ultimately were shut out of regionals after losing to an always-tough Alamosa team.
Congratulations to them and Coach Kitchen for a successful year, and we hope they make regional action next year!
The boys team, of course, is excited to be back in regionals after last year's stunning upset by Delta during the first round of regionals. I still remember the air starting to slowly leak out of the gym during that game as it became apparent the Wolverines weren't going to make it into the next day of competition.
With a bunch of senior boys coming off a state football championship, I imagine they are better prepared for regional play this year, and good luck to them and Coach Lehnus.
To our visitors from Sanford, Denver Christian, Brush, Loveland Resurrection Christian, the Academy from Westminster, Limon, Hotchkiss and Paonia, welcome to Bayfield and Ignacio. We hope you enjoy your stay.
