Heaving the heavy sphere 52 feet, 8.5 inches Tuesday afternoon at the 2018 San Juan Relays in Ignacio, Bayfield junior David Hawkins not only destroyed his previous best by four feet, but bettered former standout Sam Westbrook's school record. Hawkins' win helped the Wolverines pile up a second-place 182 team points.
Amassing 210, Mancos not only won the 2A/1A San Juan Basin League's title but also the overall championship. Helped by sophomore Jason Foutz's SJBL-winning 8'9" effort in the pole vault, the meet-hosting Bobcat boys recorded 33 points-landing them in eighth overall, but fifth in their league.
Wolverine seniors Wyatt Killinen and Ryan Phelps each threw the shot 49'2", tying for second in the overall standings, while the overall title in pole vault went to BHS senior Colton Fine, who cleared 12'10" with classmate Chad Winkler (12'4") and sophomore Dawson French (11'10") following closely.
BHS senior Shea Marx won the overall 100-meter dash with a time of 11.67 seconds. He was also tops in the 200 (24.08), while IHS sophomore Jonas Nanaeto finished second in both the SJBL and overall with his 2:10.74 in the 800. Classmate Elco Garcia, Jr., was fourth with his 4:56.90 in the 1,600.
Bayfield's 4x100 relay (Marx/Briant Cuellar/Josh Kaufmann/Turner Kennedy) paced the field with a winning 46.00, and the 4x200 (Dax Snooks/Dawson Heide/Killinen/Carl Heide) was also best in show with a 1:33.30. Snooks won the 110m high hurdles in 15.97 seconds (specialty kingpin Carl Heide did not compete), and Phelps trashed his previous best in the discus by nearly four feet with a massive 159-foot, seven-inch effort.
Kaufmann claimed second overall in the event with a 137'10.5" best.
Amongst SJBL discus throwers, Ignacio's Mitchell Neil took sixth (81'11") and the senior also earned third in the shot (39'6.5"), just ahead of classmate Natoni Cundiff (37'3"). Neil was also seventh-fastest amongst league competition in the 100 (13.15). Bayfield freshman Zeb Shields' 2:16.57 ranked him second amongst non-SJBL runners in the 800, and sixth overall.
