Not only does Bayfield senior Carl Heide push himself to be the best, but those lining up next to him.
But that's not all bad; 5A Fountain-Fort Carson's Jason Farrell certainly benefited last Saturday from Heide's re-breaking of the Class 3A record in the 300-meter hurdles. Trimming another 0.29 off his previous best, Heide clocked 38.07 seconds at 5A Colorado Springs Doherty's 2018 Spartan Invitational. Farrell hacked 0.87 off his season-best to win in a blazing 37.84-leaving the pair 1-2 in the statewide standings.
BHS' girls' record in the same event also fell as junior all-around threat Jordan Lanning was victorious in 46.12, beating 5A Colorado Springs Liberty's Jasmine Charles by 0.34, and she was only 0.02 slower than 5A Aurora Grandview's Kameryn Brown in the 100m hurdles with her second-place 15.29.
Heide also lowered his BHS-best in the 110m hurdles, clocking a third-place 14.49 inside Garry Berry Stadium, helping the Wolverines rack up 50 points and place fourth, behind only 4A C.S. Pine Creek (86), F-FC (67) and 4A Monument Palmer Ridge (62).
On the girls' side, the Wolverines totaled 38 points and tied 4A Colorado Springs Air Academy for seventh place overall. Grandview won easily with 133, and LHS finished second with 84. Lanning also placed second in the high jump (5'6") and took third in the long (17'2.5"). Senior Tiarra Christensen tied PRHS' Julia Howe for third in the discus with a best throw of 113 feet, seven inches.
In the girls' pole vault, Bronwyn Hunter and Bella Shoup placed 8-9 after each managed to clear 6'1", and Christensen finished 11th in the shot (30'11").
Senior Ryan Phelps earned a third for the boys with his 149'5" discus toss. Senior Dax Snooks did likewise in the high jump (6'0"), as did the 4x400 relay (3:29.90). Pole-vaulter Dawson French placed fourth with a best clearance of 12'7", while David Hawkins took fourth in the shot put (49'4").
