By Kevin Aten
Dear Patrons of Bayfield School District,
I am honored to be the new Superintendent of the Bayfield School District. As our students return to school, I cannot wait to meet each young person, our families, our staff, and our community.
Through inspiring a no-excuses teaching and learning environment, in my 29 years in education, I have seen the lives of countless hundreds and maybe thousands of students changed for the better through our work. In education, we must not rest until we achieve 100 percent graduation for all families and students. My passion and commitment are to create a future of hope and happiness for our students.
Thanks to our taxpayers' investment of nearly $40 million, we are creating modern learning environments, enabling us to impart future-ready skills to students growing up in the 21st century. Opening both Bayfield Intermediate School and Bayfield Primary School, and a revisioning of Bayfield Middle School will ensure our learning places are safe, healthy, and comfortable for our students and staff. The new schools are not only functional, but will also truly honor and inspire the collaborative work of our students and our staff; after all, we are Your Learning Place.
A future-focused school district requires personal communication and long-term relationships to build trust and commitments. As superintendent, I will be a leader who brings parties together, as I believe, "Progress, change, and innovation are built at the speed of relationships." I am committed to creating outreach to our community stakeholders and ensuring the Town of Bayfield and the surrounding area in the Bayfield School District continue to grow and to thrive.
During my first three months and beyond, my priority is to engage our community in meaningful dialog and to build those lasting relationships. Please know my initial community outreach will begin with the following events:

As a Colorado native, I take great pride in the fact my roots run deep in the Centennial State, as I grew up on a farm between Durango and Bayfield. In my youth, I was active, for over 10 years, in La Plata County 4-H projects and leadership activities. I am always looking to bring my innovative vision of hope and grit, inspired by values learned on our farm, to provide collaborative work with staff, students, and families. I am living a dream by returning to serve in a place I simply call "home."
