Thank-you party for 416 Fire reliefThe Bank of the San Juans and Durango Land and Homes will hold a party to say "thank you" to firefighters and those who protected homes, families, natural resources and animals during the 416 Fire.
The party will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio.
The event is free, open to all and will feature barbecue, drinks, music, dancing and outdoor games.

Ignacio library offering legal helpA free legal clinic for those without an attorney will be offered from 4 to 5 p.m. Aug. 10 at Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave.
Volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help with forms and explain the process of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues and civil protection orders.

Senior Center offering driving courseAARP Driver Safety will offer a driving course from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at Durango/La Plata Senior Center, 2424 Main Ave.
The refresher course is for drivers 50 and older. Participants will learn current rules of the road; defensive driving; how to drive safely in challenging situations; and how to manage age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.
Participants who complete the course may be eligible to receive an insurance discount and are encouraged to contact their insurance agent for more information.
Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers.

Strater to host 1960s-style dinnerLa Plata County Historical Society and the Animas Museum will hold a "Culinary Heritage Dinner" at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.
The theme for this year's dinner is "Swinging Sixties Restaurant Revival," and the event will recreate dishes from popular 1960s spots, such as the Terrace at the Strater Hotel, Red Barn restaurant, Silver Spur and Chez Louis. Past culinary heritage dinners include the early 20th century in 2016 and World War I in 2017.

Archaeological Society to meet WednesdayAs part of the Four Corners Lecture Series, the public is invited to the next meeting of the San Juan Basin Archaeological Society at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College. Dr. Heather Smith will present "The contribution of Southwest archaeology to our understanding of how North America was occupied by humans." Outdoor movie showing at rec centerThe Pine River Library is hosting an outdoor showing of Black Panther on Friday, Aug. 10 on the lawn above the Forest Lakes Rec Center. The film starts at 8 p.m. and will still be shown inside in case of inclement weather. There will be free movie theater popcorn from Allen Theaters for all. Blankets or chairs are welcome to enjoy a night at the movies under the stars!
