Photos: Rachel Bauer named valedictorian

In a small ceremony Jan. 29 at Bayfield High School, senior Rachel Bauer was named the valedictorian for the class of 2019. She found out she would also receive a $20,000 scholarship through the Bayfield Education Foundation. Ida Mae Whitcomb, the BHS 1941 class valedictorian, had directed her heirs to set aside the money for this year’s top academic achiever. Whitcomb’s daughter said the bequest brought the BHS graduate and successful Denver businesswoman joy in her declining months last year. Rachel will attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix this fall and will major in biology and pre-med. She hopes to become a neurosurgeon.
